SR-22 Cost Estimator
Pick your state, what triggered the requirement, and your coverage type. The estimator returns a realistic monthly range based on typical 2026 high-risk pricing — so you can judge whether the quotes you receive are fair.
Estimate only — actual quotes vary by carrier, ZIP code and full driving record. The cheapest real quote usually beats this range; the most expensive usually exceeds it.
How this estimate is built
The estimator starts with a per-state base: the typical monthly premium for a 35–54-year-old carrying state-minimum liability after a standard high-risk event. It then applies multipliers — the violation type (a DUI prices above an uninsured-accident filing), age (drivers under 25 pay a steep additional premium on top of the filing), and coverage type (full coverage roughly doubles the liability-only number because the surcharge applies to every line; non-owner policies cost well under half because they insure no vehicle).
The range is deliberately wide (roughly −20% to +25%): high-risk pricing varies between carriers more than any other insurance segment. Two carriers can quote a factor of two apart for the identical record. That variance is your opportunity — the practical use of this page is as a fairness check. Quotes far below the range deserve skepticism about what they exclude; quotes far above it deserve competition.
What the estimate does not include
- ZIP-code rating. Urban ZIP codes price 20–60% above the state base; rural below it.
- Credit-based insurance scores where state law permits their use — a factor that can swing quotes by 30% or more in either direction.
- Multiple incidents. A second violation or at-fault accident on top of the filing exceeds what a single multiplier can represent.
- The filing fee (one-time, $15–$50) — shown separately in the result box.
Beating the estimate: what actually works
Three moves reduce SR-22 premiums more than any discount. First, volume shopping: request five or more quotes and make carriers compete — the spread is the discount. Second, right-sizing coverage: on a vehicle worth less than two years of physical-damage premium, liability-only is the rational configuration. Third, telematics: usage-based programs let clean current driving partially offset the historical violation — the only mechanism that turns good behavior into immediate savings while the filing is active.
